Zones 7-8: Warm

Zones 7 and 8 are characterized by a long, warm growing season, mild winters, and hot summer months. Spring starts early, giving gardeners extra time to establish plants before the intense heat of midsummer arrives.
These zones are ideal for long-season, heat-tolerant crops. Eggplants, peppers, melons, sweet potatoes, okra, and winter squash produce abundantly under the sustained summer sun. Additionally, the mild winter temperatures allow for a second planting season, making it possible to grow cool-season crops like kale, carrots, and collard greens right through late autumn and into early winter.
Beginners should watch out for the midsummer slump. High heat and intense sunshine can stress plants, cause tomato blossoms to drop, and dry out soil rapidly. Consistent watering becomes critical during July and August. Providing afternoon shade for sensitive greens, applying a thick layer of organic mulch to retain ground moisture, and planning for a fall garden early will keep your site productive throughout the year.
